During a semester long course, I was given the opportunity to study the history of graphic design and mass production in a letterpress class. I gained an understanding of multiple types of presses and how they are operated. I also was able to learn how to correctly assemble the pieces of letterpress equipment and mix ink in order to mass-produce advertisements, cards, books, and posters, as well as independent projects for personal enjoyment. I was also able to experiment with drawing & carving linoleum pieces in order to keep my pieces original and unique.
My two favorite projects are a poster advertisement, as well as a collaborative book we created as a class. Another designer and I created the layout and feel for the poster, which was intended for a bluegrass music festival in Massachusetts. I took part in carving the linoleum banner illustration, laying out all of the small type near the bottom, and assembling the piece on the press.
The idea behind the collaborative book was about the travel experience of departing and arriving. I was challanged to take where I am from and where I would enjoy traveling to, and show my departure and arrival to that place. The first page is all related to the Detroit airport, because that is where I fly out of for any departure. The second page was made for the Sydney, Australia airport in order for my arrival. I took the airport codes & cities, and then created “passport stamps” in order for the audience to get the feeling of acquiring a new passport stamp upon leaving/entering a country.
